I didn't see it coming. You don't have to make my mistake.
I'm Dag Ronhovde, a physiotherapist, and the reason Health After 40 exists is a simple, uncomfortable one: I ignored the warning signs in my own body, and by the time I paid attention, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure had already moved in.
Health After 40 — practical prevention, built from lived experience in Nanaimo, BC
My Health, By Decade
Active, healthy, felt invincible
Busy building a career, health on autopilot
The turning point I didn't notice
Diagnoses started arriving, one by one
Managing it all — and building this instead
What Happened After 40
For most of my life, my health took care of itself. I trained, I worked, I moved for a living — as a physiotherapist, staying active was practically part of the job description. So when things started to shift after I turned 40, I didn't take them seriously. A little more weight. Blood work that ran a bit high. Blood pressure that crept up. None of it felt urgent.
It doesn't feel urgent for most people — that's exactly the problem.
By the time it feels urgent, you're not preventing anything anymore. You're managing it.
Now, at 62, I live with type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure — three conditions that, in my own experience, trace back to the same decade of small, dismissible decisions. I know how easily this pattern can happen, because I lived it, and I understand it professionally, because I've spent my career helping people address the downstream effects of similar changes in their own bodies.
Based in Nanaimo, BC, still practicing and building.
Personal account, not medical advice for others.
The decade where small choices compound quietly.
Why I Built Health After 40
As a physiotherapist, helping people is what I do — it's not a slogan, it's the actual work. But I can only put my hands on so many people in a clinic. Health After 40 is my attempt to reach further: to hand people the warning I never got, while they still have time to act on it.
This is not a generic wellness site. It is built from the specific, lived experience of someone who crossed 40 thinking he was fine, and found out ten and twenty years later that he was not. Every article, guide, and resource here is aimed at one outcome — helping you make a different choice than I did, before your own diagnoses arrive.
What you will find here
- Practical movement guidance you can use without a gym membership.
- Clear explanations for blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure basics, written for general education.
- Meal and habit tools designed for busy people after 40, not 25-year-old athletes.
- No hype, no miracle claims. Just what I wish someone had handed me at 41.
My Purpose
If one person changes course early, this has done its job.
If even one person reads something on this site and changes course — moves more, eats differently, gets the blood work done, takes the early signs seriously — before it feels urgent, this project will have done exactly what it was built to do.
For general wellness education only. Not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. If you have an existing condition or take medication, talk to a qualified professional before changing your routine.
